What’s In a Name?
A four-penny nail is a small hand nail traditionally used in finish carpentry.
But there’s a little more to it.
My daughter’s name is Penelope, and she was born on the 4th. So “Four Penny” is a nod to both my craft and my family—a small detail with a lot of meaning behind it.
My Background
I’ve been around carpentry since the age of 10. My dad bought an old, dilapidated farmhouse, and we got right to work restoring it. I helped as much as I could and was instantly hooked. From bike ramps to treehouses, I was always designing and building something.
Right out of high school I was hired by a prominent construction firm in Boston, where I spent the next six years refining my craft. I worked on the restorations of some of the city’s most historically significant homes, and even saw my work featured in Architectural Digest.
In 2010, I started a new business focused on custom installations and finish carpentry. Over the years, I developed an even deeper appreciation for the details that are often subtle but immediately felt in a beautifully executed space.
In 2019, with a growing family and a move from Boston to Charleston on the horizon, I decided it was time to build something that reflected my experience, standards, and vision, and Four Penny was born.
Today, Four Penny brings together years of hands-on craftsmanship, and an appreciation for thoughtful design. I believe the best spaces are both beautiful and enduring—carefully considered and built to last.
